Dear DANDELION,
What a joy to receive your letter. I loved the envelope and card cover.
Your message was a blessing. I am so glad that you were blessed by what
Jesus did in and through Amy and George. I am delighted to learn that
you want to live in a similar manner as they did, living and ministering
by faith, trusting primarily Jesus to supply your needs as He has
promised. My heart's desire is that some day you will read Amy
Carmichael's autobiography, The Gold Cord, where she recorded how Jesus
led her to seek provision, to seek guidance when on dangerous missions
rescuing children from temple prostitution, and to seek co-laborers who
would walk beside her in her ministry. If and when you feel led to read
it and you aren't able to get a copy, please let me know so I can share
one of my copies with you. If I had the choice of only two books for
the rest of my life, I would choose the Bible and the Gold Cord.
I hope you will also read Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret, where you
see how Jesus led Hudson to go to China, trusting only Jesus for
provision, and then to trust only Jesus to send and provide for the
100+ missionaries that later joined him in his controversial ministry.
Controversy seems to surround people like Amy, George and Hudson,
daring to trust and ask only Jesus to supply their daily needs, and not
only their needs, but also the needs of those to whom they ministered.
Amy and Hudson early saw the need to dress and live their daily lives in
much the same manner as the people to whom they were sent. Betty Elliot
did the same with the Aucas, except she didn't participate in their
nudity. Amy, George and Hudson were so controversial that at first few
if any ministries and mission organizations wanted to have anything to
do with them.
You need to be prepared for the possibility that traditional and
established ministries might not share your enthusiasm for living like
Amy, George and Hudson did. It is indeed a calling and it won't work
for you if you aren't called to do it. Choosing to depend on Jesus
alone for your provision means that you must be willing to, at times,
have only food, clothing and shelter.
" 6Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, 7for we
brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the
world. 8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be
content. 9But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a
snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into
ruin and destruction. " 1 Tim 6 ESV
The blessing in following Jesus in this Way is that you know daily,
moment by moment, if you are in His Will. If you live like Amy, George,
Hudson and the calling of Isaiah 58, you will see Jesus provide for
your daily and moment by moment needs when you are in His will. When
you step out of His Will you will see both His provision and His
peace-that-passes-all-understanding (Phil 4) depart and decrease,
replaced with lack of provision and a mind bothered by doubts and
questions. The walk of Isa 58 is essential to such a faith walk:
1 “Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins. . . . .
6 “Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.
11 And the Lord will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in." Isa 58 ESV
" 3:21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence
before God; 22and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep
his commandments and do what pleases him. 23And this is his
commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and
love one another, just as he has commanded us. .. . . 5:14And this is
the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything
according to his will he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us in
whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked
of him." 1 John
The beauty of the Lord's leading through the Spirit is that He seals
His calling and will in your heart with that amazing and supernatural
peace that passes all understanding when you are walking in His will.
The newly born again believer who knows little of the Word of God can
be led effectively by this reality. Literally you could be at a
crossroads or a fork in the road and asking Father for guidance, and if
you are walking with Him according to Isa 58; Rom 14:23; Phil 4:6,7; &
1 John 3 and 5, you will experience His amazing peace if you turn and
go in the direction He Wills, or you will experience a noticeable lack
of peace and the presence of doubts if you turn and go in the direction
He has not chosen for you. It is necessary to note when given two
choices or two directions, and you have no peace about either, I would
recommend that you wait at that spot on the road, or in your life,
until you get direction from Him, because sometimes He wants us to wait
on Him silently, and other times He wants us to backtrack. The Lord led
Samuel Morris through the African Jungle in this manner, leading him to
the Christians who led Him to saving faith in Christ. Jesus led Kin Ei
Ahn Sook (If I Perish) in this same way as she fled from the Japanese
police who wanted to punish and jail her for her Christian faith during
WW2.
Agreed that you are not called to sell yourself or your ministry, but I
believe you are called to inform and educate others in Christ of the
needs of our SNIP brethren, and how those others can help meet the
needs of our SNIP brethren. That is a noble calling,
seeking to provide spiritual food to the spiritually hungry, spiritual
drink to the spiritually thirsty, and spiritual clothing for those who
need to be clothed with Christ's righteousness.
Your brother in Christ,
Tyler
